Gallery Row

Gallery Row sits quietly in Charleston’s early morn just before dawn. Interesting to see who is out at that hour. The City is not quiet. Local residents beat the summer heat by getting out for a walk. And today is trash pickup day as in be careful where to park. Early morning parking restrictions are there for today’s activities.

Tonight will be really busy downtown as it is First Friday on Gallery Row – open house, free food and drink and even some good art. Trash collectors of a different sort will be out in force. Dee wants to do the scene particularly hands. Should be plenty of hand activity what with all that reaching for all those free munchies.

The Pink House

The Pink House is one of Charleston older buildings built around 1690.  Made of Bermuda stone that gave it a pink cast, the building was a tavern in the 1700s and an art gallery more recently.  It is now on the market for a cool $999,500 so you too could own a piece of Charleston history.  The building has been photographed so extensively that it seemed appropriate to do something different and in deference to its past history as an art gallery I created an artsy photo with software.

Angel Oak

It’s time to be back in Charleston back in gear – as in we need to add some images to our Charleston portfolio. We need some better travel type shots for a port profile on Charleston we are doing forPassageMaker. So what do we do? We go the other direction and head out of town. Not too far out but enough to qualify as a good case of approach avoidance.

It’s the middle of the morning. The light is challenging and so is the scene. Signs all over the place asking folks not to sit on the tree or climb on it. All sorts of people around mostly behaving themselves. What to do? Can’t hide the signs. People won’t leave until closing so let’s aim up. And that’s when things get interesting. More fun, better composition opportunities up there. And, as we can see, the creative opportunities for Dee only begin at the tree. (Who would ever have thought that I would turn out to be the conservative, reserved literalist in the family?)

Old Sheldon Church

Old Sheldon Church is just up the road from our hosts in Beaufort. For some time we have intended to get back out there to attempt to do it justice. As with most intentions “for some time’ has had that indefinite quality so endemic to intentions.

Finally, we got to indulge in makeup overkill. Went out there three times in four days. Because we are nutso photographers we got out there really early – early enough to trigger some massive night lights. OK let’s go back out when it’s really dark and see what the night lights (think prison yard lights) do for us. Yep, really nutso. Well it worked. Today’s post card was taken 15 minutes before sunrise. Maybe not so nutso.

Sheldon Church

This ruined church is the site of many weddings and parties.  In bright daylight it has been a challenge to bring out accurate color.  My hat is off to the photographer who creates lovely pictures in this setting.
