Lake Santa Fe

Last week we took a brief business trip back to Florida. While there I did a photo shoot for our boat builder out on a local lake. Our site was an old dock chosen because it went well out into the lake and to good water. The target boat could pass and turn just off the dock. While the boat is a handsome one the real show was behind us. Need to get back out there to shoot some more.

Robert

Robert lives in Newport News, VA. We are not sure just where. He has recently moved and will probably move often over the next months. He is homeless and the winter shelters have closed so he must find an overpass or sheltered building to call home until local authorities force him to move on and then the process starts over.

Robert is a nice man who regularly shows up at a support organization for Newport News’s homeless. I was there Sunday morning to help the sponsors by photographing their world. Seems the folks at Harvard’s Kennedy School for Government who study wealth distribution in this country want a practical seminar in poverty.

Yesterday we went over to Virginia Beach to photograph two homeless camps, one under an overpass, one in the woods. Both had been bulldozed. The overpass camp succumbed to construction. The one in the woods was cleaned out by local authorities. Since Virginia Beach has no facilities for homeless as most cities don’t, these folks will find other places to stay and eventually the authorities will root them out of those places.

We met the folks who run the local help center back in Edenton and I volunteered to do images for them as it would be an interesting challenge. Robert’s amazingly long and deep face rewards me. If we get them good images from homeless hangouts in Washington, DC and Baltimore, we will have paid our dues. We expect to be taken on an exploratory tour of DC and Baltimore in a couple weeks when we are up in Annapolis.
